Your First Time at a New Jersey Dispensary

6 min readThe Vault TeamUpdated April 2026

Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel a little weird. Here's exactly how a first visit goes in New Jersey, start to finish, so the whole thing feels obvious by the time you arrive.

Bring your ID

You need a valid government-issued photo ID showing you're 21 or older. Driver's license, state ID card, passport, or passport card all work. Military IDs work too. The one rule: it has to be current. Expired IDs aren't accepted under state law.

What to expect at the door

A staff member or security associate scans your ID, confirms you're 21+, and waves you through. The whole thing takes about 15 seconds. Once inside, there's a budtender — that's the person who'll help you pick out what you want.

If you're nervous
Tell the budtender it's your first time.
Seriously. Two-thirds of the people who walk in have never been to a dispensary before, and budtenders love first-timers — it's much easier to help someone who's open about being new than someone trying to fake confidence.

How to actually order

You have three options:

  • Order ahead online. Browse the menu, build your order, and pick a time. Fastest option.
  • Walk up to the counter. Look at the menu and tell the budtender what you're after.
  • Ask for a recommendation. Just say “I want to feel relaxed, I'm new to this, what would you suggest?”

Paying — yes, it's weird

Cannabis is federally illegal, which means most credit card networks won't process dispensary purchases. At The Vault we use Aeropay — a bank-to-bank payment. For drive-thru, it's the only option (no cash at the window).

If it's your first time using cannabis

The standard advice — start low, go slow — exists because it actually works. There's no rush. You can always take more. You can't take less.

For flower, that means a single small inhale and a 5-minute wait. For edibles, start at 2.5mg or 5mg of THC and wait two full hours. If you do end up too high, don't panic. Drink water, find a quiet place, and ride it out. It always passes.
